I like to think of myself as a humble adventure attempting to explore and understand this massive multi-dimensional space we live in. I love the process of unraveling the deepest secrets of knowledge, which is perhaps why I am currently pursuing a PhD degree. I also believe all the knowledge we learn should be applied to release suffering first on our Earth, thus I choose to pursue engineering. I believe many advanced technologies will require novel manufacturing techniques to be realized in the (near) future, and thus I choose this topic for my graduate studies.

Dark times lie ahead of us and there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right.” |
Computer Axial Lithography (CAL) -- The first research project that I work on and a huge inspiration for me. I am in fact continuing my study in this topic as my graduate study.
I was born in Tianjin, China in 2000. At the time my family gave me the name Yaxuan Sun, whose meaning I am not quite sure about. The middle character (ya) might imply my parents’ wish for me to be a graceful girl, which - if you know anything about me - is nothing like who I am.
Thus, when I traveled to the U.S. in 2016 for high school, I took the chance to introduce myself with a self-given name. I called myself by the unknown variable -- X, which is also the first letter of the last character of my Chinese name (Xuan). I love this letter; it implies limitless possibilities. It also represents the unknown variable in the mathematical world, which I suppose would really ask people to think what I am like when they mention my name; it is an inherent property of ‘X’ that I really like - in the end, I wish people would remember me as me rather than a name / a letter / a rigid definition. After graduated from high school with 96 college-transferable units in 2019, I continued my education at the University of California, Berkeley. I earned my Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2022 and am currently pursuing my next academic degree (MS/PhD) in the same department under the supervision of Professor Hayden Taylor. |
Outside Engineering
I love my families and friends. I love the concept of "love". I think "love" is the entity that distinguishes living and death.
I like reading and writing. Besides pursuing my academic interest, I am hoping I could become a fiction writer as well. I want to create stories to help people feel the love and happiness in this secular world. A few books I really love: Crime and Punishment, Brave New World, Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, Little Prince, The Awakening, Hard Times, Waiting for Godot, Deep Work, Three Body Problems, and many short passages by CiXin Liu who is the author of the Three Body Problems. I like to volunteer for youth education events. I try to regularly exercise. I particularly enjoy swimming, biking, skiing, and playing soccer with friends. I am attempting to cook healthy food more often. I love animals. I play guitar. I like watching movies. and shows. I like building meaningful connections with great people. I love talking about research and learning new subjects. I love philosophy, literature, math, physics, bioengineering, history, anthropology, astrophysics, economics, political science, rhetoric, cognitive science, and maybe chemistry & biology. I don't quite like the subject of foreign language because I have a very bad memory when it comes to vocabularies but am trying to learn a bit more about it. |
